Though
the state ended up fourth, it was second to none if reviewed honestly; the
unfair practices that are recently adopted in the national games were a
major factor in determining the medal balances.
This is no excuse to our failing in some
events due to lack of coordination and practice but is about pointing out a
fact which cannot be ignored if the overall development of athletics of the
nation is the ultimate aim.
The recent trend seen in the national
games is to unfairly fit in extra events to help the host state to get an
upper hand. According to this trend, the Chinese Martial Arts forms such as
‘Vushu’ and ‘Thaikondu’ was introduced which gave the North Eastern states
like Assam and Manipur an unfair advantage which they utilized in increasing
their medal tally.
Giving undue importance to such
Non-Olympic events will never help the athletics. Instead it will only help
in growing a sense of dissatisfaction among the athletes.
