New Butterflies spotted in Aralam

Three new varieties of butterflies have been spotted in Aralam Wild Life Sanctuary in a recent butterfly study camp, jointly organized by Malabar Natural History Society and Kerala Forest Department. Chemben Velli Varayan, Opex Si x Line Blue and Macculate Lancer are the new varieties, spotted here.

It was the tenth butterfly migration study camp. Around 70 butterfly enthusiasts from different parts of Kerala took part in the camp. The camp focused in eight sites in the sanctuary.

There was unique migration of Albatross butterflies .The sight of migratory flies landing at this wild life sanctuary from Kodak hillside of Karnataka was amazing, said the participants. Around 2,000 butterflies have flown in, in five minutes .The white flock of the wonderful butterflies created a dazzling world of attraction, said the butterfly- watchers.

Aralam has been the treasure hub for 203 species of unique butterflies. The variety collection of butterflies in Aralam is a living instance of Kerala’s bio-diversity.

The team has witnessed the mating of thousands of butterflies on the sand banks of Cheenkanny and Urutty Rivers.

Aralam Wild Life Sanctuary Warden K.V. Uthaman inaugurated the camp. Dr.Jaffar Palott, V.C.BalaKrishnan, Balakrishnan Valappil, Dr.Saji Perambra and C.Sunil Kumar led the Camp.
