A recent report from
the United Kingdom might have shocked all in Britain. Indian born couple
abandoned their IVF (in vitro fertilization) produced twin girls in Wolver
Hampton hospital.
“How could any parent
do this?” This was the response of National Health Service official to
The Sun. How this kind of strange incident is possible in 21st century
Britain? If it has happened in India, not many would have been shocked! We
have had many such cases in North Indian states.
Female babies are
often abandoned in India. But in multi cultural Britain, this incident has
been discussed as a strange one. The twins were delivered at the New Cross
Hospital in Wolver Hampton. The medics attending the caesarian section were
shocked to hear these words form the parents. “We do not want the wrong sex
babies”! They were then transferred to a central NHS hospital in
Birmingham.
They had fertility
treatment in India as it is illegal in UK in such an advanced age. The
parents were born in India but are British citizens living in Birmingham.
The mother aged 59 and father, 72. The child was conceived in India with
fertility treatment and returned to the UK for delivery.
The mother, after
being discharged, had to stay in the hospital for at least more than one
week. However, she left the hospital against the medical advice of the
doctors.
There was a report;
the couple later came forward claiming their twin.
They could have
changed their mind after the issue became a hot controversy in the U.K
media. In India there have been many reports of killing baby girls even as a
fetus.
Abandoned baby girls
are a common sight in Indian cities.
It was common in
northern part; but now even in highly educated Kerala, the number of such
infants have been increasing, according to social activists. Some doctors
and hospital authorities have supported to this cruel act too. Diagnosing
the sex of babies is in fact a criminal offence in India.
Parents who do not
want girls are ready to offer bribery to get diagnosed and aborted. The
diagnostician, doctors, and the clinic authorities are equally guilty in
such a case. Still there are many such cases. But now one must be anxious
over the trend outside India. Is the entire world fed up with baby girls?
Girls, the most wonderful creature of the universe symbolize the creative
nature. Generally, women symbolize beauty and patience; stand for truth,
sincerity and love.
Girls are the one to
maintain ancestry. They act as sister, wife, mother and grand mother.
Psychology of this cruelty is not beyond comprehension. There are clear
reasons for those who commit this act such as the belief in India that a son
would be the bread winner of every family and that girl a burden upon their
shoulders.
The marriage of girls
is said to be the main burden as far as parents are concerned. Is this
attitude contracted to western countries or are Indians spreading this
behavior?
In modern world
order, women are equal to men in all walks of life. In professional
excellence, women have performed similar to men. As per the constitutional
law there is no discrimination at all. Still there is a haunting question as
to why at least some parents abandon girls?
