Creek is at the centre of Dubai
city. Once can’t describe the city without describing the Dubai creek. Creek
is used for trade related transportation of goods in dhows and small ships.
Important role played.
The creek is
14 Kms long. It now has eight wharfages. Countries which depend on the creek
for their trade with Dubai are other Gulf States, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Somalia
and India etc... The Creek has played an
important role in the economic development achieved by Dubai.
Once Dubai
was a centre of pearl trade:
On one side
creek opens into the Arabian sea and the other side ends in the aweer area
of Dubai. There are two bridges and one tunnel across the creek to cross
between deira dubai and bur dubai. To familiarize, they are called shindaga
tunnel, maktoum bridge, and the garhoud bridge. A new wider bridge has been
planned to be constructed due to the heavy increase in surface
transportation needs. Since the early days, when Dubai was a center for
pearl fishing and pearl trade, Dubai's trade development was attributed to
the creek.
Ships and dhows.
Ships and dhows from the Gulf, Iran, the Indian subcontinent and even from
European coasts called on Dubai. These ships laden with between 200 and 300
Tonnes of cargo used to anchor at the creek to fulfill the needs of the
local markets or for re-export purposes, emphasizing the historical position
of Dubai as a center for regional trade.
A city divided by the creek.
Dubai city has
two parts. One is called the Deira dubai and the other is known as bur dubai.
Together they form the main business and shopping areas of Dubai city. In
deira, there are major shopping malls like Al gurair centre and City center
and in bur dubai there is Bur Jumar and other malls.
