Vatakara, July 7: The Azhiyur grama
panchayat has initiated the second phase of the renovation of the open-air
mini stadium at Chombala, one of the main playgrounds in the region, which
has been remaining largely unused due to lack of proper maintenance.
The ongoing works at the stadium include
the renovation of compound wall, construction of entrance structures and
setting up of a proper drainage system at a total cost of Rs 1.65 lakh,
allotted by the panchayat.
The renovation also includes the setting
up of a basketball court in the stadium at a cost of Rs 2 lakh, availed on
account of the local funds of C. K. Nanu MLA.
According to Azhiyur panchayat president
A. T. Sreedharan, the panchayat has formed a people’s committee for the
construction of the court.
The drains are being constructed outside
the stadium in the west to avoid water getting accumulated on the stadium
ground. Entrance structures will come up at two main entry points and the
height of compound wall will be increased.
The Azhiyur panchayat had spent Rs 1.5
lakh for the development of the stadium during 2004-2005. It requires
additional funds from the state government for its full-fledged development,
including the laying of turf and setting up of other facilities.
