Vatakara, July 7: The newly installed
committee of the during 2005-2006, including a project to create job
opportunities for persons from BPL families in order to make the families
self-reliant.
The formation of self-help groups,
setting up of street lights on a selected road in the municipality, eye
disease detection camps for primary school students and a medical session
for detecting educational disabilities in students will be other major
programmes of the unit.
According to Ranjith Damodaran, the
newly elected secretary of Badagara Rotary, the scheme meant for BPL
families would be a comprehensive scheme as it would help those who want to
develop their own business establishments for a stable monthly income.
“It is not easy for entrepreneurs from
BPL families to avail loans for need of persons to provide surety in banks.
By our new scheme, we will try to get loans for such poor families to set up
business units like STD booths, DTP centres. The assistance will be provided
also for farming,” says Ranjith.
The Rotary will also organise awareness
camps for drivers on first-aid and traffic rules. It will also install
traffic signal boards and caution boards in Vatakara and nearby areas. A
massive forestation drive with the involvement of individuals and
organisations will be another key programme of the unit.
The Rotary unit will also conduct cancer
detection camps, specialised medical camps and training camps for
youngsters. It will also conduct competitions to enhance creative skills in
children and distribute books and uniforms to poor students.

Jayaprakash says that the main activities conducted by the unit last year
were the distribution of plants for a forestation programme, setting up of a
library for Cheenamveedu UP School at a cost of Rs 14,000 and construction
of a bus shelter on the National Highway bypass.
