IIM-K seminar on Oct 31 : KOZHIKODE:
The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) will host an

Coaching programme for UGC
exam :KOZHIKODE: The UGC Centre for Coaching
Minorities, Calicut University will conduct a coaching programme from
December 2 to 10 for the benefit of candidates belonging to educationally
and socially backward minorities and other communities who are intending
to take the UGC JRF/Lectureship test on December 26.
According to a release, the coaching to be held on the
University campus will prepare students for the first paper of the UGC
test. Post-graduate in social sciences, humanities and languages who are

One-day seminar on
biotechnology : KOZHIKODE: The district study centre
of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) will organise a one-day

NIT-C announces M.Tech
programme : KOZHIKODE: National
Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) will offer M.Tech. programmes in
engineering disciplines and Ph.D. programmes in engineering disciplines,
mathematics, chemistry and humanities (English Language Teaching).
According to an NIT-C release, admissions to these
programmes with scholarship\assistance will be based on the Graduate
Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of
Technology and Indian Institute of Science. Candidates can get details of

Ramzan month begins :
KOZHIKODE: Ramzan the month of fasting will begin today, according
to a release here yesterday from the chief advisor of the Hijra Committee
of India.
The month of Shawal begins on November 13, and Muslims will celebrate Id-ul-Fitr
on that day, it was added.

State conference of AKPAHI
on Oct 8 : KOZHIKODE: The sixth State
conference of the All Kerala Parents' Association of Hearing Impaired (AKPAHI)
will be held in Palakkad on October 8 and 9.
The AKPAHI State president, Neduveli Ravi, will
inaugurate the delegates meeting at Sravana Samsara Vidyalam in Yakkara on
October 8 and the Palakkad MP, N.N.Krishnadas, will inaugurate the public
meeting at Town Hall on October 9. K Sankaranarayanan, MLA, will present
the State-level awards and K A Chandran, MLA, will release the AKPAHI's

Latest digital library for MC :
KOZHIKODE: The Health Minister, K K
Ramachandran, will inaugurate the state-of-the-art digital library with
high speed Internet connection at the Kozhikode Medical College library
here on September 17. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, the Medical
College vice-principal, K Parvathi, said the digital library would cost Rs.
50 lakhs with facilities of high speed Internet connection and 16
computers.
The libraray is funded by the Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG),
an organisation of alumni of the Medical College in the U S and
Canada.Online medical journal subscriptions and CDs of medical textbooks
will be provided. The new digital library is being set by C-DAC,
Thiruvananthapuram. C-DAC will run the library for two years, after which
the responsibility will be entrusted with the college
.
Though Internet facility is available in the library from 2001, there are
only six computers set up with the assistance from the National Medical
Library, New Delhi. Once the library gets 16 computers as part of its
digitalisation programme, the library is likely to extend its working
hours from the present 12 hours to 16 hours or even round-the-clock.
Proposals for additional staff required for this purpose has been send to
the Government.
The students will be charged a nominal rate of Rs. 5 per hour. Smart cards
will be issued to students at a charge which they can use for accessing
the Internet. M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP, will distribute the first smart
card at the function. The Mayor, Thottathil Ravindran, will preside.

World Suicide Prevention Day
held: KOZHIKODE: The proactive role
to be played by the media in helping prevent suicide was stressed at a
discussion organised under the auspices of the Thanal Suicide Prevention
Centre and the Calicut Press Club in connection with the World Suicide
Prevention Day here yesterday.
Most of the prominent speakers, including psychiatrists and social
activists, cautioned the media on reporting suicide cases and
sensationalising them, while journalists pointed out that suicide was
newsworthy and that media had the right to report it to highlight social
issues.
Adhering to the guidelines drafted by the Department of Mental Health of
the World Health Organisation (WHO) in reporting suicides, giving adequate
coverage of programmes involving prevention of suicide, presenting facts
and suppressing misinformation in news items were some of the suggestions
that cropped up at the discussion.
Protest march to IGs office
held: KOZHIKODE: The CPI(ML) Red Flag
organised a march to the office of the Inspector General of Police (North
Range) to protest against denial of bail to those arrested in connection
with the effigy burning case. The case related to a protest against the
Supreme Court verdict on self-financing colleges. Workers of the Kerala
Vidyarthi Sangadana, Yuvajana Vedi and CPI(ML) Red Flag had been denied
bail and placed under remand.
The protesting volunteers were stopped by the police in front of the
Nadakkavu Government Girls High School. The CPI(ML) Red Flag State
committee member, K N Ajoy Kumar, inaugurated the march. Its secretariat
member, M P Kunhikanaran, the Yuva Jana Vedi district president, K T Manoj,
among others, addressed the protesters. The denial of bail was violative
of the existing legal provisions, it was alleged.
Contests for students:
KOZHIKODE:The Gandhi Peace Foundation Trust in connection with the
Hindi Week will conduct competitions in Hindi in elocution and light song
for high school, Plus Two, college and Kendriya Vidyalaya students on
September 14. The topic for the elocution is `Bharatiya ektakeliye Hindi'.
Handwriting competition will be held for upper primary
and high school students. Those interested should inform the Secretary,

Additional school shift
started: KOZHIKODE: The second shift sanctioned for
Kendriya Vidyalaya - one in Kozhikode was inaugurated yesterday by P P
Baby, Station Engineer of the Kozhikode station of All India Radio (AIR).
Because of the launching of a second shift, the student
strength in the school had increased by nearly 400, P V Krishnan Nair,
Principal said.

lecture series at Farook College on Sept 4 :
KOZHIKODE: The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E Ahamed,
will inaugurate the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
Decennial Year Lecture Series at the Farook College here on September 4.
The vice-chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), V N Rajasekharan
Pillai, will deliver the lecture on the main topic of this year, ``Quality
Higher Education and Sustainable Development'' on September 4. The lecture
series is being jointly organised by NAAC and Farook College. The
Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University, Syed Iqbal Hasnain, will preside
over the function.
The College was one of the five colleges selected from the country for
organising the lecture series. Around 300 teachers from the colleges in
South India were expected to attend the lecture series as delegates.

Padmaprabha award : KOZHIKODE: The Padmaprabha
Memorial Trust has invited entries from publishers and authors for its
coveted literary award instituted in memory of the late M K Padmaprabha
Gowder, hailed as the architect of modern Wayanad. Books belonging to any
genre would be considered for the award.

International Year
of Rice to be observed : KOZHIKODE:
Medicinal and aromatic rice of Kerala will be the focus of a programme
arranged on August 20 and 21 jointly by the M S Swaminathan Foundation and
the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU).
The programme titled `Science society interface on medicinal and aromatic
rice', will be held at the Regional Agricultural Research Station at
Pattambi to mark the observance of the International Year of Rice. It will
have technical sessions, open sessions on science society interface and an
exhibition on rice and rice-related products and activities.
There would be presentations on conservation, evaluation, purification and
genetic improvement, biochemical and molecular characterisation, medicinal
properties and validation of indigenous knowledge. The observance was to
provide fillip to the efforts to increase rice production, N Anil Kumar,
Director, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation's Community Agro-
Biodiversity Centre in Puthoorvayal said yesterday.

Essay contest on August 1:
KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode district Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation
will conduct an essay competition for Plus Two and college students on
`The end of education is character', on August 1, at the following centres.

Homeo PG students
undertake dharna:
KOZHIKODE: PG students of Government Homeo Medical College
undertook strike and dharna to protest against not having received stipend
for the past seven months. The students blamed the apathy of college
authorities and government for their present predicament.
The dharna was inaugurated by Dr Rubi Mathews. The principal informed the

Calicut VC honoured :
KOZHIKODE: The Director General National Cadet Corps (NCC) has
bestowed the honorary rank of Colonel in the NCC to Dr. Syed Iqbal Hasnain,
vice-chancellor, Calicut University. According to a NCC release, the rank
of "Colonel" in the Army is an honour normally conferred upon
distinguished and very senior officers for a fixed period. Dr. Hasnain
would be bestowed the rank of Colonel of NCC at a ceremony to be held on
July 9 at the Senate Hall in Calicut University campus in Thenjipalam.

Sri
Lankan Airlines first flight to Kozhikode arrives :
KOZHIKODE: With the view to increase trade relations and
promote tourism between Sri Lanka and India, the maiden flight of the Sri
Lankan Airlines from Colombo to Kozhikode touched Karipur Airport here
yesterday morning to a grand welcome. The inaugural flight UL 169, which
left Colombo around 9am, reached Karipur Airport fifty minutes later,
carrying 130 persons, including crew members, on board.
The Sri Lankan Airlines is the first non-Indian airlines to operate
regular services to Kozhikode International Airport. Kozhikode is the
Airlines' 10th destination in the country and will operate on Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Speaking at the inaugural function. Sri
Lankan Airlines IT head, Nigel Oshea said that the service will help to
increase the volume of tourism and trade between the two countries. Wieman,
head of operations in India and Nepal, said that Sri Lankan airlines is
the only international carrier to operate from all gateways of Kerala.

Kozhikode to become
litter-free city : KOZHIKODE: The
Chief Minister, A K Antony, will inaugurate the World Environment Day
celebrations and the official starting of the activities for the
implementation a multi-crore model solid waste management system for the
Kozhikode Corporation. Antony will also present the Pollution Control
Award for 2004 on the occasion. The Minister for Local Self-Government
Institutions, Cherkalam Abdulla, will declare the first set of litter-free
zones in seven wards of the Corporation.
Addressing a news conference here yesterday, the Kozhikode Mayor,
Thottathil Raveendran, and the Deputy Mayor, P T Abdul Latheef, said the
model solid waste management system - a joint venture of the Kozhikode
Municipal Corporation, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board and the
Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to make Kozhikode a model city -
was the first of its kind in the country.
The total cost of this ambitious project was Rs. 6.13 crores. Raveendran
said the proposal was to collect the degradable and non-degradable solid
waste from houses and shops in the city. In the first phase of the
programme the collection of waste would be carried out in the wards 2, 3,
4, 45, 46, 49 and 50 falling under Kunduparambu, Edakkad, West Hill,
Karaparambu, Nadakkavu and Chakkorathukulam. The collection of waste would
begin in these wards on August 15.
Anti-Tobacco Day observed :
KOZHIKODE:The Goodbye Smoking Centre in association with the
Comtrust Factory Staff Recreation Club observed World Anti-Tobacco Day by
organising awareness programmes on the ill effects of smoking and
consuming pan masala.
The awareness programmes were held at the Puthiyara Tile Factory and
Mananchira Weaving Factory. Slide shows were held. Meanwhile, Suraksha,
the drug awareness and counselling assistance centre, will conduct a
workshop on de-addiction.

Foudation Awards announced :
KOZHIKODE: The senior politician and CPI leader, P K Vasudevan Nair, and
senior journalist, U K Kumaran, have been chosen for the award of the
Moidu Maulavi Foudation for 2004. P K Vasudevan Nair gets the award for
his bold intervention in social issues and his untainted record as a
social worker.
Kumaran, who is on the editorial staff of Kerala Kaumudi,
is an established short-story writer and is presently vice-chairman of the
Kerala Sahitya Academi. He has been selected for his bold and honest
initiatives as journalist and for his strong social commitments.
The award-winners were chosen by a committee headed by
the KFDC chairman, P V Gangadharan and consisting of K T Raghunath ,
former president, Malabar Chamber of Commerce and A Sajeevan, journalist.

cartoon contest: KOZHIKODE: A State-level cartoon
competition for the B M Gafoor Award will be held at the Town Hall here on
May 31. `Manjalam'', a cartoon newspaper, is organising the programme in
connection with its first anniversary. The best cartoonist selected from
the general category will bag the B M Gafoor Award and certificate.
An exhibition of old and new Malayalam newspapers and a

Anti-tobacco day programmes :
KOZHIKODE: The Goodbye Tobacco Centre here in
association with the Dental Clinic will organise a free check-up camp and
awareness programme on `Tobacco and oral cancer', from May 24 to May 31.
The programme is being organised in association with the World
Anti-Tobacco Day. Essay and painting contests are also being organised.
The topics for essay contest are `Tobacco ban and legal regulations' and
`My role in combating tobacco'. `Anti tobacco awareness', will be the

Workshop of
rainwater harvesting : KOZHIKODE: Cost
effectiveness of the applied technology holds the key for the success of
rainwater harvesting in Kerala, according to a workshop on evolving
strategies for mobilising rainwater harvesting. The workshop was organised
by the Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and the Center for
Water Resources Management and Development. Roof-top rainwater harvesting
technology is cost effective, easy to manage and needs only physical
energy.
NIT-C director Dr.S S Gokhale inaugurated the workshop.
KRWSA executive director Dr.B. Ashok delivered the keynote address.Ashok
said the Government is open to all suggestions on effective tapping of
rainwater.
KRWSA manager (training) P K Kurian, who demonstrated
the various aspects of the issue, said rainwater harvesting should be
vigorously promoted in Malabar where the distribution of rain is low.
Quoting the documents released by the International Water Management
Institute, Kurian said by the year 2025, India would have two types of
regions based on the availability of water. At present the State has
around 12,000 rainwater storage tanks. A massive training programme would
be charted out for implementing rainwater harvesting, Kurian added.
Kozhikode to host National
School Games :KOZHIKODE: The 49th National School Games
Championship, organised by the State Education Department, will be held
here from May 12 to 16. While Indoor Stadium would be the venue for volley
ball tourney, hockey matches will be held at the Medical College and
Devagiri College grounds. Medical College Ground will also host Ball
badminton competition. Kho-kho contests will take place at East Hill
Physical education Ground.

KSSP to
hold special programmes : KOZHIKODE: The Kerala
Shastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) will organise special programmes in
connection with the `Shukrasamtaranam' (transit of Venus), on June 8. The
rare celestial phenomenon was occurring after a gap of nearly 121 years.
Lectures for high school and Plus Two students based on the academic
curriculum will be held on the Earth, Universe, and calculating the
distance to the Sun. Training in making telescope would also be held. The
district-level orientation programme will be held at the Mokeri Government

Maithri-2004 exhibition
in full swing : VATAKARA: The Kozhikode Rural Police
have put together a wide range of items from tear gas shells to stenguns
in its 'Maithri-2004' exhibition, as part of the community policing
initiative of the police department. Arms and ammunitions of the police
force, a detailed illustration of the history of police in India, a
presentation of traffic signals and newspaper reports and photos on major
accidents in the State are displayed at the week-long exhibition which
began on Wednesday.
NCC's Indian mountain gun, which was previously used by the army in
1965 and 1971, is another key attraction. The District Fingerprint Bureau
has showcased their Fingerprint Developing Kit and various methods to
study the fingerprints of culprits. The exhibition also showcases a dummy
presentation of an unusual death and a miniature display of the execution
of death by hanging.
