Anxiety over Poll results - 03/05/06

Anxiety over Poll resultsKozhikode: Both fronts in the state are in confidence after two phases of assembly elections have been concluded with good turnout. UDF and LDF both claim that they can form the next govt with more than 90 seats. Second phase marked 73.49 p.c.

District level poll percent is as per the following:

Wayanad: 70.38
Kozhikode: 75.09
Malappuram: 74.87
Palakkad: 74.07
Thrissur: 72.01
Erakulam: 71.04

Highest polling percentage of women is in Mankada constituency in Malappuram where Minister M.K Muneer is in fray. Second constituency which marked highest women voters is Meppayur where youth league leader T.T Ismail is in fray. Final stage of poll in the state is on Wednesday. Kannur and Kasargod districts will go to booth on Wednesday. Heavy security has been arranged for this phase of poll and digital cameras were instituted at the polling centers which were considered as tension areas.

Counting of votes will be done on 11 May. Delay in the counting of votes increase the anxiety of people in and outside Kerala. Many of the exit poll surveys predicted in favour of LDF. But UDF doesn’t admit this by citing instances like the last L.S polls in which predictions came in favour of NDA.

Political analysts opine that no sweeping majority is likely this time. If LDF does win, they are only likely to get 10-15 seats majority. Some, yet unknown undercurrents will decide the political fate of leaders like Thomas Isaac, M.A Baby etc in the left. While DIC president K.Muraleedharan and IUML leader P.K Kunhalikkutty is facing similar situation at Koduvally in Kozhikode and Kuttippuram in Malappuram district.

Predictions of winners on the basis of poll percentage has become out of time. In the past, high percentage helped UDF win seats. Now the situation has changed according to political analysts. Rural areas marked high percentage than Urban constituencies. Kozhikode-1 and Kozhikode-2 showed low percentage than in Meppayyur, Perambra, Thiruvambady etc. It shows that urban voters are not interested in polls. They are fed up with political systems and parties. Other anxious question this time among the politicians is whether BJP can open its account with O.Rajagopal .
