Both
fronts in the state are eagerly seeking support of communal organizations
for the coming assembly polls. Some organizations have already announced
their stands. People’s democratic front(PDP) and Jama-at-islami have come
forward in support of L.D.F while N.D.F and Kerala Dalit Federation will
stand for the victory of U.D.F
P.D.P has some influence in the southern
districts of Kerala while N.D.F has decisive role in Malabar, especially in
Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Both of the organizations can
definitely influence Muslim vote banks. The important aspect of these
tie-ups is that some members among both organizations are against this
policy.
Highly confidential sources say that in
the in-house meetings many workers questioned P.D.Ps and N.D.Fs recent
political stands. P.D.P leader Mahdani was sent to jail during the rule of
E.K. Nayanar. This issue has become a hot dispute among P.D.P cadres. Some
party sympathizers are of the opinion that Ommen Chandy had done his
maximum to free Mahdany. At this juncture work in favour of L.D.F would not
help the organization. Says one faction in the P.D.P.
On
the other side a group of N.D.F workers are questioning the organisation’s
move to support U.D.F. This group alleges that N.D.F has become a B team of
Muslim league. K.N.M and Sunnis are the other major organizations with
decisive role in election.
Meanwhile a move of UDF leaders to get
the support of SNDP leader Vellappally Natesan didn’t succeed. Vellappally
commented that UDF had ignored SNDP. Adivasi Gothramaha Sabha is supporting
UDF in the coming polls. In short, secular Kerala is watching communal
votes. Their stand will decide who will become the rulers.
