The Calicut medical college witnessed a rare surgery on 22-06-06 when five toothbrushes were taken out from the belly of  a mentally challenged youth. 

Velayudhan, son of Madhavi at Koodathayi, Thamarassery swallowed toothbrushes deliberately. He is believed to have suffered much pain and difficulties while ‘eating’ these brushes. 

He swallowed these brushes one by one. But till the 5th one entered him, his stomach didn't react to his adventure. However when the fifth one entered him, he started to have pain and vomiting with symptoms of fever. He was then admitted to a private hospital in Wayanad first and subsequently referred to Calicut Medical College. 

When the x-rays of belly were examined by doctors, they were shocked to find the brushes. He was an inmate of Thapovan Ashram, Cheeral, Wayanad. Thirty year old youth sometimes become violent on periodic upsurges of his mental illness. He tried to carry out other similar adventurous but for the watchful eyes of his family. The operation was conducted with utmost care and after his arms and legs were tied.
