Saddam Hussein has
become history. The dictator who ruled over Iraq for a long 20 years and
more, had to die in the hands of those who saved him in 1959 when he was
sentenced to death for trying to kill General Abdul Karim Quazimi.
The American sponsored military operation to topple then govt
left the twenty two year old Saddam badly wounded by a bullet. It was the
C.I.A who helped him to flee to Egypt. There on Saddam and the govt led by
him became a tool of the American govt. Ironically in Saddam’s case the hand
destroyed the tool, he was sentenced to death by the dummy Iraqi govt for
killing 148 Shias from the town of Dujail in 1982; time has strange ways of
revenge.
The present govt of Iraq, a mere rubber stamp of the American
govt believed that their political interest will be served if the deposed
dictator was liquidated at the earliest. They ended his story on a the holy
Bakrid day ignoring the feelings of the Muslims worldwide. The prime
minister Nouri-al-Maliki who was already struggling for the leadership of
Shias with the supreme council of Islamic revolution in Iraq saw it as a
chance to pose himself as the avenger of his community and thus gaining
their admiration.
The execution was not at all a surprise, the entire process
from the outset was designed to produce only one outcome. The hurried
killing is suspected widely to be in the interest of the American govt who
feared that if the trial is to be conducted further, their involvement in
many crimes alleged against Hussein would be exposed. The conduct of the
trial was a mockery of the justice on several counts. The trial judge who
delivered the verdict was very much biased, the defense was not given enough
time to prepare, not permitted to examine its witnesses, and were also not
allowed to present its closing statement. Three defense lawyers were killed
during the course of trial.
Saddam Husein was no saint he was of-course a brutal
dictator who deserved the punishment but the disgraceful trial process set
in motion by the U.S is seen as a serious threat to International peace and
justice. Being an economical and military superpower is a very good thing
but using it to run the world the way one wants is asking for trouble which
the U.S will soon realize. Killing of Saddam on the holy Bakrid day is being
seen worldwide as a challenge against the whole Muslim community whose
hatred the U.S is already enjoying stomach full. This will become even worse
with this shameful event.
The murder, ignoring the repeated requests of all the nations
including the European Union is a blow on the international mutual respect.
It is rightly pointed out that the dead Saddam is going to cause a greater
problem to U.S than one who was alive.
