2006
was not a very good year for district. The city was literally rocked
by a twin blast and the bus-stands of the city were attacked in such a
fierce, drastic manner for the first time in its history.
It all began with the police recovering
gelatin sticks from the cloak room of the KSRTC bus-stand on January 2 2006.
The recovery had created great panic all around and the police assured
public that the public places were under strict vigil but it went wrong as
usual with twin bomb blast at the KSRTC and Mofusil bus stands on March.
Timer devices which were detected in
these bombs were unheard-of in the state. The police failed to lay their
hand on the responsible though the hands of extremists were suspected.
The beginning of the year, the court
acquitted all the accused in the ice cream parlor case after all the
witnesses turned hostile. A major step in the road development was witnessed
in February with the opening of the second phase of the Thodayadu -
Ramanattukara bypass on feb-26 but the road proved to be a death trap on
inaugural day itself. The road till now has claimed a precious 26 lives.
The beginning of the monsoon exposed the
inefficiency of the city corporation to find a long lasting solution to the
mounting solid waste management issue. The locals took to the streets
against this irresponsible behavior. They physically stopped the corporation
workers from dumping the waste at the Njeliyanparambu dumping yard. In
return the Kudumbashree workers who were appointed of collecting and dumping
waste stopped their work and parked the waste laden trucks in the
corporation premises.
The LDF which assumed power in May had
their share of problems from the district. They had tough times explaining
and apologizing for the couple of custodial deaths. The first of such case
was reported on July 17 when Abdul Rasaq was found dead in police custody.
On august 2nd the corporation banned plastic below 20 microns in
the city limit but the ban received only a mixed response.
A panic of Anthrax was spread after a
cow found dead was diagnosed as affected by Anthrax. Another important event
was the death of the noted CPM leader Mathai Chacko on October 13. He played
a major role in wresting the UDF strong-hold Thiruvambadi. Mythri scheme
initiated by the city police flopped with a jeweler attacked in the broad
daylight of gold worth 4 lakhs on November 30.
District collector A. Jayathilak was
removed from the post following a stand off between him and the Central
Election Observer. The district was headless till the end of the year.
The health ministry faced a setback when
the public took to streets after Roopisha, a 10th standard student died on
december12 after she was administered Tetanus Toxoid. On December 17 the
chief minister V.S inaugurated the Golden jubilee of the Calicut Medical
College, the Koilandy harbour was inaugurated and the Thiruvannur Cotton
Mills was reopened on the same day.
The year however ended with a
celebrative note with the city decorated and the people in full mood with
the Malabar Shopping Festival Rocking the city.
