The
most handsome boy with a dreams conquer the world is remembered in Goa at
the 37th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). He was born in
November 3rd 1906.After 100 years, IFF was inaugurated on 23rd November
by the youngest son of Prithvi Raj Kapoor, actor director Shashi Kapoor and
actress Vidyabalan amidst unprecedented security measures following fears of
possible terrorist attack at the emerging film city. This 11-day
extravaganza will be held from 23rd November to 3rd December.
Coming a long way from the first IFFI held in Bombay in 1952 the festival
today has earned its own place in the sun after the Paris based federation
international des association de producteurs de films (FIAPF) conferred
official recognition to the Indian festival in 1963 putting it par with
those in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto. The awards of the festival are
namely ‘golden peacock’ award for the best film. The ‘silver peacock’ for
the most promising director and a special jury prize for individual artistic
contribution.
The award consists of cash prize of Rs.1000000 (golden peacock), Rs.500000
(silver peacock) and Rs.500000 (special jury prize), a medal and
certificate. An international jury of reputed filmmakers chaired by Rolf De
Heer (director, Australia), members Olivier Assayas (director, France),
Jahnu Barua (director, Assam), Grazyna Szapolowska (actress, Poland), and
Leticia Bredice (actress, Argentina).
This year the event synergizes global participation, high profile glamour,
top notch entertainment with world renowned international celebrities
walking the red carpet. The festival rolls out a repertoire of critically
acclaimed international films, world premier, film bazaars, children’s
animation movie, street shows, music concerts and open air beach screenings
tons of delegates and public in a perfect packaging of glamour excitement,
fun, and celebrity participation.
This year nearly 200 international and Indian films will be screened during
the 11 days period including critically acclaimed films from Asia, Africa,
Latin America, Germany, Italy, France, Argentina, Japan, Spain, Australia
along with a number of Indian feature and non feature film.
After much controversy on bollywood films getting an unfair importance over
other Indian film industries, it was focus on south Indian at the ongoing
37th IFFI for the first time a south Indian film was premiered at the
festival. The privileged film was the Kanada film Tananam tananam by the
national award wining director Kavita Lankesh.
A retrospective dedicated to G.Arivandan noted Malayalam filmmaker took off
screening of his last film Vasthuhaara..
