Latest Political Potboiler - Thiruvambadi - 24/11/06
- Report by VK Baburaj

December 4 Thiruvambadi Assembly bypoll has arrived. So much is at stake for both LDF and UDF. Both want to win this election to prove their point.

Why Thiruvambadi is so important for both the Left and Right? Is it because of the LEADER or younger leader?

Poor – the people have always been. However elections are time to show their might – to tilt the balance of power. Elections are when politicians are often reminded of people power and existence of this class called ‘public’.

Accusations, counter accusations and emotions run high for now. Whether a particular party has effective solutions for the problems voters put before them, no one knows. ‘Kudumba Yogams’ (family meetings involving leaders) are hot. First time, such Yogams are so much in spotlight.

Power and money, that’s what politics has been always about and the people plight is what remains. Their concern has always been about the most basic of amenities.

The gathering in Kochi is where the NCP – DIC (K) merger took place! Kochi, the Queen of Arabian Sea must have been stunned at these frequent political mergers and de-mergers. Dissidence and utterances such as ‘Oomen Chandi’s Oomaakki’ would not place anyone in the right spot.

People are cool in Kerala after a long rainy season. Let it rain throughout the year. They are waiting to see what happens next. Left and Right, both are trying all arsenals in their disposal to get their candidate elected. Nothing is known so far; we need to wait, and can expect to get things cleared within a couple of days.

What about BJP (NDA? What are their strategies? – The hangama of selecting their President in Kerala has just got over.

LDF as well as CPM is thoroughly confused about a YES or NO to the NCP’s plea that the veteran leader be permitted to join campaign with LDF leaders. UDF leader still has no love lost for the leader. Does it mean NCP – CONGRESS merger in Kochi? It’s a wait and watch…

Who knows what is in store? NCP and its leaders keep saying NCP will be having a decisive role in Kerala politics and emerge as a formidable force. Is it the beginning of a show of force together or the final downfall of what’s left of the grand old master tactician leader and his beloved son? He seems to have run out of ideas with nothing more left in his ideas coffer? What happens next is anyone’s guess.

Religious sentiments – seeking vote in the names of caste. We have to believe it is not happening or is it? We, the people of Kerala and especially voters at Thiruvambadi need to wait some more time to know the strategies of different parties. Do they care for Voters? They do, at least until the election is over!

Thiruvamabai has a lot to tell. On Dec 4 it will. It is interesting to see the political circus in the meanwhile. Let us hope that public does not become victims.

May be, we will witness the GIANT fall down to earth!
