The discussion to solve the Chengara Adivasi (tribal) land
issue has failed. CPM lead government in Kerala waited for seven months to
discuss the issue with the protesters. The adivasi people of Chengara have
been fighting for their land since last August. The joint council of tribal
protesters under the banner of Sadhu Jana Samithi has demanded five acres of
land. They have encroached and campaigned at Harrison Malayalam estate. In
the beginning there were around thousand people. Now many organizations and
groups came forward to join hand with this group including landless tribal
community. The number of agitators increased and now there are around 18,000
protesters.
But the LDF government led by CPM which proclaimed to stand
for the poor downtrodden people, ignored this struggle altogether in the
beginning. There are allegations that CPM did use party machinery to split
the agitators. As the result of this political effort, action council
general secretary Thattayil Sraswathy resigned from the protest and made
some controversial statement on Committee president Laha Goplan. Pro CPM
media group focused on the negative angle of Chengara land protest.
The main allegation of CPM and the government against the
protest is that most of the agitators have acres of land in possession and
only a small group belongs to the landless, adivasis. Kerala High court had
intervened on the issue and directed the government to solve the issue
without blood-shed. The opposition MLAs had visited the protesters at
Chengara and assured their support. How to solve the issue without police
action is a big challenge before the state government. Consensus is the need
of the hour to avoid any untoward incident according to social thinkers and
peace loving people...
