NSS
president G. Sukumaran Nair's recent statement on temple administration is
to be discussed among all believers and cultural leaders. What he has said
was :"Devaswom portfolio should not be managed by a minister who has a
little faith in God. "Non believers have no right to rule the department.
He made this statement while
criticizing the minister for devaswom G. Sudhakaran. Recent delay in Aravana
(offering-prasadam) at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple, Minister's unwanted
interference in Guruvayoor temple, war of words with temple priests etc,
also made a lot of controversy.
Kerala Chief Minister V.S.
Achuthanandan called an emergency meeting and the opposition demanded the
resignation of minister G. Sudhakaran on Sabarimala prasadam issue.
The ruling front's alliance like
RSP, CPI, and Janata Dal (S) questioned the ministry's functioning.
Whenever LDF got majority, the
devaswom department used to be part of Janata Dal's portfolio. But
this time the leading party in the left front CPM took over the portfolio.
Since then the minister’s
actions and reforms in devaswom has been controversial issues. Many
questioned this. The UDF alleged the minister is plotting against temples
like Guruvayoor and Sabarimala.
When NSS also came forward against
the minister, this issue sparked a heated discussion in the ministry too.
But the question is: do we need a God-believer in our ministry to rule the
temples? At least they
should have an attitude that never hurt the temple devotees and priests.
If
the ministry find any mistakes in the part of Devaswom officials, they could
take action and mend the officials.
True devotees should get the
justice!
