Guruvayoor Devaswom board made a controversy again by
submitting an affidavit explaining that there was no evidence of
Poonthanam's existence. This is one of the most serious mistakes on the part
of Devaswom authorities according Krishna devotees.
The disclosure by Kerala Kaumudi daily shocked many Krishna
devotees and cultural leaders. The controversial statement was submitted by
the board in reply to a public litigation filed in Perinthalmanna Muncif
Court. The litigation was filed by a native of Perinthalmanna, P.V. Sasidharan
in connection with getting permission for organizing public program at
Poonthanam Illam, run by Guruvayoor Devaswom.
Sasidharan approached the court because the former Devaswom
board had rejected the request by the Poonthanam Smaraka Samithy for
organizing a program because of some complaints. Jnanappana author and Lord
Guruvayoorappan's favorite devotee Poonthanam's life and literary works have
always been recited and remembered by every Keralite. His life story itself
has been immortalized in the heart of every Krishna devotee. Even
today, Krishna devotees awake by listening to Jnanappana, a very meaningful
anecdote emphasizes the immortal and blissful nature of supreme godhead Lord
Krishna. Bhaghvan Krishna also comes awake everyday by listening Jnanappana
in Guruvayoor Temple.
Poonthanam’s poems are symbols of selfless devotion and
simplicity. There is a story of his devotion and Melpathoor's scholastic
Bhakthi. Melpathur was a self-conceit of his knowledge in Sanskrit language.
Once Poonthanam with his little knowledge in Sanskrit approached the former
to read and correct his pure Malayalam poem. At that time Melpathur was
suffering from rheumatic arthritis and he didn't care and even scolded him.
But lord Krishna appeared in front of him and told as "I like Poonthanam's
Bhakthi than Melpathur's scholarship". He asked Melpathoor to edit
Poonthanam's poem. This mythological story not only shows lord Krishna's
love and care towards his true devotees irrespective of their knowledge but
his warning against self-conceit.
Lord protects his innocent devotees. He warns the
self-conceit people, even if they are his devotees. This is quite relevant
in this time also. In the name of lord, Devaswom authorities (intruded
politicians) play games-according to many Krishna devotees. A shocked
cultural and literary personality came forward, questioning the unnatural
decision of Guruvayoor Devaswom board. When press people contacted
Guruvayoor Devaswom chairman Thottathil Raveendran, he stated "he didn't know
about the contents of that affidavit.” I couldn't read the affidavit because
of busy schedules.
Krishna devotee and well-known poet S. Rameshan Nair in his
strong poetic language, criticized that Devaswom authorities had tarnished
devotees with selfish motives. He indirectly alleged minister and devaswom
chairman for hurting Krishna devotees and politicizing devaswom matters.
Prominent personalities like Dr. Sukumar Azheekode, Yusufali Kechery,
Akkitham, C. Radahakrishnan came forward against the devaswom. Hindu outfits
protested in Thiruvananthapuram on this matter.
When protests and disapproval spread among Krishna devotees,
Devaswom authorities have decided to withdraw the controversial affidavit.
Every true devotee may be praying to lord “May this devaswom administrators
and politicians involved in this matter be guided to the correct path and
lead them to recite Jnanppana to wash-off their sin."
