Recent study by an independent
agency disclosed Kozhikode as a good spot for living.
Its fine habitat, people,
environment, and other such qualities made this ancient historical city, top
among peaceful cities to live in. However on the ground, it looks like
that crimes and mafia activities are increasing. Organized crimes are on the
rise in Calicut. Drug trafficking, vehicle theft, and similar crimes have
also been reported in the city and its surroundings.
Vehicle theft is reported widely
from Koduvally and Thamarassery area.
Recent robbery in broad day light
at Mananchira should be an eye-opener to the police authorities and the
public. A youth came from Mahe to remit 23 lakhs at State Bank branch at
Mananchira. Two youths reportedly came on a bike snatched the bag in
which the cash was carried and escaped.
The bike rider had been wearing a
helmet. So it was difficult to identify the culprits. Police registered a
case and started investigation. This is not an isolated incident in Calicut
city according to the police. But this was a big one. Chain-snatchers on
bikes have been common in the city of late.
But the growth of mafia elements
are alarming.
Police have admitted that drug
mafia from Bangladesh colony had encroached the city area when raids
intensified there. Many drug addicted youth had lost their lives in the
colony. There have been outside links for carrying drugs. The carriers are
being paid by the mafia. Many youths from within the city are part of this
big business. Ante-narcotic cell and city police have registered many cases
in connection with drug-trafficking.
Unemployment among youth is the
main reason of increasing drug mafia-says police. Many socio-cultural and
political organizations had come forward against the drug-trafficking
centered in Bangladesh colony after many unusual deaths have been reported
in the surroundings mainly because of consuming drugs.
Since the report of ice-cream
parlor sex racket, many such related cases were reported from the city.
Police had raided many beauty parlors and booked suspicious persons. Police
had arrested some persons involved in immoral traffic in an Ayurveda massage
centre in the city last year. Police said there was sex racket link extended
outside the district.
Vigilance cell of the telecom had
found out parallel telephone exchange in the heart of city, Mavoor road.
When two explosions occurred in K.S.R.T.C and Private bus stand, everyone
came to recognize the depth of organized crime in the city. Recent fire in
busy SM street also shocked the people of this historic city.
Investigation is still in progress
on these incidents, but Police have not been able to get the foolproof
evidence required to book the culprits. Many more crimes in small and big
scale shocked this city. In short, Calicut, the ancient city with cultural
heritage and unique peaceful co-existence, is facing many issues quite
contrary to the clean image.
