CPM Kerala state
secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized the high court comment on Kannur
political murders. He questioned the interference of the court saying
"Court's opinion was against the guidelines of constitution”. High court
judge V. Ramkumar had pointed out the need of deploying central force in
Kannur to put an end to the political murders.
He made this comment
while announcing the verdict of NDF worker and native of Thalassery,
Muhammad Fasal's murder case. The case should be investigated by CBI, ruled
the court.
But according to the
legal experts, court’s perspective on Kannur violence was timely and
praiseworthy when police had failed to halt the killings. Since the
beginning of recent political killings, opposition parties and independent
observers pointed out the need to provide working freedom to police in the
violence hit area. Political influence and governmental interference didn't
allow the police to perform their duty independently.
Opposition parties
had previously accused the government for not assuring stringent police
action. There have been allegations that police get the list of party men
from the concerned local leaders for taking custody after every crime. This
means the real culprit escapes unhurt.
The judge underscored
this kind of political interference in Kannur district which had been the
norm for long time and emphasized the need of central force to maintain law
and order situation.
This statement made
Pinarayi upset. The chief minister V. S. Achuthanandan also criticized the
high court's comment on Kannur violence.
But the discussion
among common men and independent thinkers are similar as the high court's
opinion. They have realized the fact of nexus between politicians and police
officers. In Kannur, the political criminals escape after the successful
execution of their planned crimes. Police are afraid of either their job
security or their life itself. Politicians with government influence
threaten cops. Police can't go beyond the limit of government control. This
is the reality of Kannur.
The Judge's comment
also is timely and important. Pinarayi's outburst is simply emotional and
politically motivated, according to free thinkers.
