SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-Operation) -
Information Communication Technology
workshop (ICT) urged the need of maintaining sustainable development in ICT.
Sustainability was the first necessary condition that had its own cost,
however small or marginal it may be, said Dr. Tiwari, Director, Indian
Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad.
Government should
provide both wireless and wired internet infrastructure everywhere. This
would benefit millions in the SAARC region, the experts underscored.

Maldives, Deepak Kumar Shrestha, Nepal, Deepak Adhikari Embassy of Nepal,

New Delhi, Prof. N. Balakrishnan, Associate Director IISc., Bangalore, Prof.
Ramesh Chandra, University of Delhi, Dr. Arun Varma, Advisor Minstry of
Environment & Forest, Noida, Dharmendra Dev Mishra, ex IAS, Ms. Kheya
Bhattacharya, New Delhi, S.C Tripathi ex-IAS, Noida, Prof G.N. Pandey, Prof.

from IIIT-Allahabad touched the topics of e-Agriculture and Traditional
Agriculture, Healthcare & ICT, Professional Education and ICT , Rural
e-Enterprise, Wireless Sensors / Networks, Wildlife Protection & ICT and
information Security spoke over the function.
The workshop was
organised at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad with the
support of Ministry of Science and Technology and External Affairs in New
Delhi.
Nadapuram: Cong Office
set on fire by IUML
Kozhikode: Nadapuram
Block Congress Committee office was set on fire by IUML -Youth league
workers yesterday night in protest against the statement of
Congress leader
Aryadan Muhammad against IUML. IUML workers had organized a demonstration
against Aryadan's statement.
After the protest
rally, workers in group entered in Congress office, which was closed at the
time of attack and set it on fire. Police and fire force rushed to the spot
and controlled the fire. Office files and furniture were burnt. The
demonstrators assembled in the town created tension for several hours. Many
injured in police lathi- charge. Congress workers also demonstrated against
league attack. District Congress Committee president K.C. Abu and local
Congress leaders visited the spot. Police have said the situation is under
control.
Kerala Tourism Records Sharp
Growth
Thiruvananthapuram:
Kerala tourism recorded high growth in last year, according to ministry for
tourism. Disclosing the details of tourists, minister for tourism, Kodiyeri
Balakrishnan said 5,15,808 foreign tourists had visited Kerala during 2007.
The number of
tourists is 20.37 p.c higher than 2006. The overall income from tourism
sector is 14,433 crore. In 2007 employment opportunity in the tourism sector
recorded as 12 lakh. The total investment in tourism industry in 2007 was
1200 crore. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Hotels and Resorts
have gained record growth rate. To attract tourists’ attention, Kerala
Tourism Mart will be held in Kochi from September 20 to 23. KTDC will
implement a development project of 40 crore rupees in the current year.
Women can apply for SI post
Thiruvananthapuram:
Women can apply for the post of the Sub Inspector of Police in Kerala. The
written examination and selection procedure will be the same .Government has
taken this decision after realizing that women could prove physical ability
as men in the force. But women will not be privileged to any reservation
other than the general relaxation on physical ability criteria for police
constable post. In the past, women were not allowed to apply for the post of
SI. The new decision would attract many woman graduates to enter in police
force as inspectors.
