MS
office is the giant out there in office applications. It was Microsoft's domain and still continues to be theirs.
However a small dent has been created by this now popular totally free office
package called openoffice.org.
Sun
and the Open Office:
Few years back Sun Micro Systems bought a company
called Star Office which supplied an office application package called Star
Office. Later on Sun has worked on this application to create a completely
open source program.
Open source or
open-source software (OSS) is any computer software distributed under a
license which allows users to change and /or share the software freely.
More about Open office.org:
Openoffice.org is also the name of
the website which distributes this application
over the Internet. It has a word processor like MS Word, a spread sheet program like MS
Excel and a presentation program like MS Power point. Hence all that you can
do you can do in MS office can be done in open office.org too. In addition to this, it is fully
office compatible. You can open any MS Office files on the fly from inside
Open Office.
Also, open office can be permanently
configured to save all files in MS Office format so that the files you make
in open office are instantly compatible with MS Office type file formats.
Available under Linux OS too.
Be warned that when you open an MS
Office format file made originally in MS Office and make changes to them you
may be faced with some compatibility issues. The point is
although open office.org is fully compatible with MS Office formats, it must
be remembered that it is not the same. Hence some issues while working with
complex files or files that utilise advanced MS Office features might
remain.
However when you create and work with
native open office or open office crated MS office format files, things are
always very smooth.
Open Office.org is available under Lnux
OS also. Downloading of this great
alternative to the MS Office can be done from
openoffice.org web site.
